Kara no Kyoukai

Kara no Kyoukai

Every once in a blue moon, I stumble upon works that are nothing short of genius. So genius in fact, that they run the risk of losing their audience completely… (and likely do, more often than not).

Kara no Kyoukai is one such series. Audio-visually stunning and mentally captivating, this series blew my mind in more ways than one… and it took its sweet time doing so. Initially seeming to be a short series of 7 episodes, I was surprised to discover it was actually a movie series, with each episode running over an hour long on average.

An extremely gruesome and tacitly haunting work of art, the series explores the ideas of humanity and death in a way that is both illuminating and thought-provoking; leaving one to ponder the deeper questions of life.

Of course to this end, the story is suitably complex: with every twist and turn weaving a pith to the plot’s core, and every answered question spawning many many more. For some this might be a turn off. As the slow pace, and the highly intellectual nature of the series do not make for much excitement.

But in this case, the end justifies the means – and if you do manage to make it through the whole series, you will find that it is its own reward; and you will probably be as happy as I was, that there was still an epilogue and a feature-length movie I could watch πŸ™‚

Kara no Kyoukai is a masterpiece. It makes it all the more better that Kalafina sings many of the songs used in the films. Their voices are truly their instruments.

It truly is… and oooh! That soundtrack! Certainly one of the best I’ve ever heard. Thanks for telling me who recorded it. Now I can go and find a copy of my very own πŸ™‚
