For a cycling anime, and especially for a sports anime, Yowamushi Pedal is a bit odd. Not that there are many cycling anime out there (I can’t thing of another besides Over Drive), but that sports anime generally feature talented, upbeat, and driven main characters.
Usually, this means hidden talents, unparalleled determination, and an overwhelming urge to be the best. Not with Yowamushi Pedal.
Understandably though, the hidden talent trope still remains while the rest is all in the name: Yowamushi… meaning coward – Pedal.
Yeah… a coward pedaling. 😐
As you can imagine, this means that at all the key moments where one expects to see courage and bravery, what you get is fear, doubt, and uncertainty, making for an extremely irritating experience.
BUT nonetheless, he pulls through every time – and in a sense, this is more true to life than any other approach. At the very least, it is more true to my life.
Me thinks, I’m a bit of a coward myself. 😕
So… if you can get past those moments, and appreciate the amazing comebacks this coward pulls off despite his fears, Yowamushi Pedal makes for a pretty good watch.
